No Shussing Here!

Hi and welcome to the new blog for the verbYL Librarian. For those not familiar with us verbYL is a youth lounge in sunny Central Queensland for young people aged 13-25, and is co-run by library and youth services. We're open on Thursday and Friday 3-7pm and Saturday 1-6pm plus special programmes such as Wednesday's verbYLizers (12-14 years only) 3-5pm and the 7-10pm 18+ club. Other progammes include the Reader's Lounge (a book/discussion group held fortnightly on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30pm) , and the Anime & Manga Club currently held on the first Saturday of each month from 10:30am-12midday.

So what do we do during these times? Basically, have a good time! :) My role is to interact with young people and help them to use the resources in the space which includes books, graphic novels, console games, consoles (including an Xbox 360, Nintendo WII, Playstation 2 & Nintendo DS handhelds), DVDs, CDs, magazines, computers and even board games! Not to mention the big screen plasma with Austar.

As the youth librarian my other duties include various programmes to encourage literacy including our verbYL webpage (http://www.verbyl.net.au/) and e-zine (www.verbyl.com.au/verbylize/) verbYLize in which all of the content is produced by young people, including poems, stories, animations and pictures - or anything else they would like me to include. We also have a weekly study group Tuesday 3-5pm which anyone can book into as well as access to yourtutor (http://www.yourtutor.com.au/) an online tutoring service availiable 4-8pm Monday to Friday where our members can chat live with experienced tutors for help with maths, english, physics and much, much more.

I'm also in charge of purchasing new materials for verbYL so please feel free to use this blog to suggest new things you think we should have and I will use it to announce upcoming material (new anime availiable this Saturday) :)

Looking forward to hearing your response to the blog
